Fortuna Corpsmember Rueben Penland, part of the NOAA Veterans Fisheries Program, examines an adult chinook salmon in Humboldt County.

After leaving the military, Rueben Penland was looking for something. After discovering the California Conservation Corps, Rueben says he’s growing personally, professionally, and rediscovering his purpose.

He started at the CCC Fortuna Center in late 2020. Soon, he joined the ranks of the CCC-NOAA Veterans Fisheries Program.

Now, this former Marine is helping to survey local fish populations and serving as an example to younger Corpsmembers and other veterans.
