Surveying Fish Populations with Technological Help

CCC Los Padres Corpsmember Joan Cardenas, a U.S. Army veteran, dons an electrofisher backpack along the banks of Chorro Creek near San Luis Obispo, CA.

The technology may look more like science-fiction, think Ghostbusters, than fish science.

However, to find trout in the rivers, streams, and creeks of California they’re a necessity.

Veterans Corps Fisheries Corpsmembers use electricity to help our NOAA partners count and catch fish to monitor the populations of native, threatened, and endangered species.

Such counts and tagging projects are just part of the way scientists monitor the health of our creeks and native fish populations.

It is also a great place to learn and grow for veterans.
