California Conservation Corps Placer Center Set for Multi-Year Renovation

Built as a conservation camp for fire crews in the 1950s, the CCC Placer Center has housed Corpsmembers since 1977.

The California Conservation Corps is moving forward with plans for a massive renovation of its Placer Center.

The multi-year, multi-million-dollar project will require the temporary relocation of Placer Center Corpsmembers and staff to the CCC Greenwood Center beginning May 2019.

Additionally, the Placer Nature Center – a longstanding partner of the CCC – will need to vacate its current facilities located on the CCC Placer Center grounds. After 27 years of operating on the CCC Placer Center grounds at no cost, CCC understands relocation may present new challenges for the Placer Nature Center. However, out of concern for public safety and construction operational needs, the CCC must require its staff, Corpsmembers and the Placer Nature Center to move from the site by May of 2019.

The CCC Placer Center will be a hard-hat zone during the demolition and construction as heavy construction equipment such as bulldozers, big-rigs and large construction vehicles must enter, exit and traverse the property. It simply would be unsafe for children and the general public to visit the Placer Nature Center and for Corpsmembers and staff to work at the CCC’s Placer Center during the renovation.

The end result of the construction project will be the conversion of the CCC Placer Center into a modern, more efficient, and safer facility to house nearly 100 Corpsmembers – 18 to 25-year-olds and military veterans up to age 29. Corpsmembers based at the renovated Placer Center will advance their career and educational opportunities while serving the people of the State of California by responding to fires, floods, and other natural disasters, along with building trails, conserving California’s lakes and streams, and volunteering in our local communities.
