“It’s been a once in a lifetime experience. I’ve never done anything like this … we’re very lucky to be given this project to work on.”

Not for the faint of heart, and not merely just hanging out. CCC Inland Empire Corpsmembers literally hung out cliffside to help restore parts of the McWay Falls Overlook Trail in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park near Big Sur this past year.

Safety was a top priority. From testing cable ties every day, to harnesses and rope tying. The crew and our California State Parks trail experts created an elaborate system to build the historic trail back up, after Mother Nature helped tear it down.

Restoration on the Edge

Inland Empire Corpsmember Geovanny Contreras demonstrates how Corpsmembers wore harnesses to safely build a new rock wall to support the trail walking path above McWay Falls.

The system was complex. The view made it tolerable. The fact they’re building on the CCC legacy of 1990s and helping millions of international visitors experience one of only two tidefalls in the state, even more impactful and worth it.

The project highlights the amazing partnership and collaboration between our agencies, specifically with the trail specialists State Parks employs, many of whom were once Corpsmembers themselves.
