Protecting Santa Cruz's Pogonip

Monterey Bay Center crew leader Jahaira Zaragoza uses a chainsaw to cut thick brush in the Pogonip open space and trail system park in Santa Cruz, CA.

During the COVID-19 crisis, the work to prepare for and prevent wildfires takes no break.

CCC Monterey Bay Corpsmembers are working to protect a prestigious 640-acre park and trails system in Santa Cruz called Pogonip. Corpsmembers are treating 11 acres of the open space, trail, and park system.

A grant from the Prop 68 Parks and Water bond is funding the project that will help protect trail users, residents, and nearby UC Santa Cruz from wildfire by cutting down mounds of overgrown brush. Just watch out for the poison oak.
