Making A Difference
Fire has been a part of CCC Chico Corpsmembers’ lives. Now, they’re working to use good fire to prevent devastating wildfires from impacting their community once again.
It’s a matter of when, not if, fire hits a long-unburned area of Upper Bidwell Park in Chico.
With the work of the CCC Chico Center, such fires should not be as powerful or as damaging.
Corpsmembers are doing it by fighting fire with fire. Burn piles take cut ladder fuels and limbs and removes them from the wildfire equation.
Good Fire
Flames, in this circumstance, are not to be feared, but rather trusted to reduce the wildfire threat and benefit the local ecosystem.
With less vegetation available, fires should pass through with less ferocity.
The coals created by the burn piles, will help native plants thrive and re-grow, adding to the benefits of “good fire.”
Working with the City of Chico and Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve, Corpsmembers are delivering for their community while gaining knowledge and skills for themselves. It’s our mission, after all, to do both.
Learning All Parts
Corpsmembers from the CCC Chico Center receive wildland fire training and all the personal protective gear needed to safely, and appropriately, construct, ignite, and contain burn piles.
