Clearing Trees, Navigating Mud to Reduce Flood Risk in Santa Barbara County

CM Jude Castleberry tosses tree limb as part of flood control project

Santa Maria Corpsmember Jude Castleberry tosses a tree limb away from a cut pile during a flood control project in Santa Barbara County. Behind her, another Corpsmember cuts down overgrown trees. Jude works to disperse the cuttings more evenly.

In the California Conservation Corps, the work can be downright hard at times.

Even getting to a project site can present challenges.  A little bit of mud and creek water is no match for our CCC Santa Maria Corpsmembers.

You might say they’re pros at making the hard jobs look easy.

A project aimed at ensuring flood water can flow is just another day in the office for these young adults.
