“I’ve gotten to work on some really cool things that I hadn’t really thought about. There’s a lot of concepts that cross over. And there’s a lot of new concepts that don’t cross over at all.”

Rory Tessmer Fields
CCC Los Padres Center

Turning literal elbow grease into a career opportunity. It’s how Rory Tessmer Fields went from CCC Los Padres Center Corpsmember to heavy equipment mechanic apprentice with Caltrans.

Rory joined to serve on a CCC wildland firefighting hand crew, and he did, but automative repair has always been a passion. Working with our state and local partners, the center was able to find him an opportunity to work as a mechanic trainee at the local San Luis Obispo maintenance yard.

From mowers to street sweepers, Rory learned the in’s and out’s of being a Caltrans mechanic and gained the necessary experience to jump to his next opportunity. Talk about greasing the wheels to success!

Hands-On Training

As a trainee, Rory Tessmer Fields got hands-on training and guidance from experienced, veteran Caltrans mechanics. It’s an experience that helped Rory build his resume and move toward a civil service career.
