Antioch Dunes NWR Habitat Restoration

Napa Corpsmembers work together to remove tumbleweeds for fuel reduction. Tumbleweeds are invasive plants choking out natives. With more room for native plants Lange’s Metalmark Butterfly can flourish.

Contra Costa County is the only place on Earth you can find them and Napa Corpsmembers are helping the Lange’s Metalmark Butterfly not just survive, but thrive.

These orange and black insects are listed as an endangered species and invasive tumbleweeds are part of the reason why. Corpsmembers dig in with pitchforks and heavily gloved hands to remove truck loads of tumbleweeds.

The end result is helping conserve a butterfly most people are unaware is in a fight against extinction.
