Education after the CCC

Corpsmembers have many opportunities for continuing education after the CCC,  through colleges, universities and technical schools.  In addition to CCC scholarships and AmeriCorps education awards, there are many other options to finance higher education through financial aid, federal aid and California state grants.  Please see below for a list of links and helpful information about financial aid that can help pay for college after your time in the Corps.

 

Financial Aid Resources

The State of California and federal government offer financial resources to attend college. ICanAffordCollege.com provides students and parents with information about financial aid programs and services to help pay for college.


Federal student aid has the following requirements:

  • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen with a Social Security Number;
  • be a high school graduate; enroll in an eligible program as a regular student, seeking a degree or certificate; and
  • register with U.S. Selective Service if you are a male between 18 and 25.

 

The online calculator, will provide you with an early estimate of your federal student aid eligibility, increase your knowledge of the financial aid process and provide information about other sources of aid.

 

Federal Aid Program examples include the following:

 

Federal Pell Grants for up to $5,350 are based on financial need and do not have to be repaid.

 

Federal Stafford Loans for undergraduate studies in the amount of $5,500

 

Campus-Based Programs include the following:

 

  • Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grants
  • Federal Work Study Programs
  • Perkins Loans

 

Required forms include Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form can be completed online. The information will help determine the type of financial aid you are entitled. Additional information in English and Spanish can be found here.


California offers a number of Financial Aid Programs, these include grants. California Grants cost nothing to apply for. Examples of Cal Grant programs include the following:

 

  • Cal Grant A Awards assist with tuition and fees for the University of California and the California State University system and up to three years at California community colleges.
  • Cal Grant C Awards assist students in technical, occupational training with books and tuition.
  • California Chafee Grants for Foster Youth are given to foster youth ages 16 to 21 -- provide tuition or job training
